[THE WORLD RAG] Texas 'Redneck Games' Surprisingly Civil
The Texas Redneck Games broke a record this year with only 54 arrests making this the calmest Redneck Games in years.
"The charges ranged from public intoxication to speeding," said Skeeter Doolittle, the organizer for the annual event. "We're proud to say that our murdering brothers and sisters stayed home - or at least drank less - this year."
Last year, there were at least 2 murders and 345 domestic abuse charges. Doolittle considers this year's event a milestone and a call for change within the redneck community.
"We are trying to break down the stereotypes of rednecks. Sure, we like to jump into mud waterholes, chuck mattresses and show our butt cracks, but that doesn't mean we can't respect each other."
Neighbors in the town of Athens, Texas were very happy to see that the event is looking to clean up its act.
"We really had enough when 2 people were murdered last year," said Franklin Montgomery, a local retiree. "It's nice to know that when rednecks get together they don't have to murder each other. I was worried for a while there when the twentieth public nudity arrest came in but they managed to keep their guns in their trucks this year."
Doolittle hopes to keep the momentum up for next year's games.
"We've been sending out emails to the attendants, trying to get them to relax on the hard liquor for next year. Let's hope that someone reads those emails to them."
