Dragon Quest IX To Be Released In Boxes Of Lucky Charms
On Tuesday, Square Enix announced that the latest iteration of their venerable Dragon Quest series will be released in Lucky Charms boxes next Christmas.
The decision to release Dragon Quest IX on the General Mills’ cereal architecture rather than the Sony Playstation brand has left many analysts shocked.
Sandy Lopez, marketing director for General Mills, said, “We are quite excited to have the next game in the Dragon Quest franchise on our platform. We feel that combining Dragon Quest with Lucky Charms will be a positive and nutritious start to a healthy day.”
The game is currently being developed by Level-5, whose designers are hard at work making the slimes render well on the untested “whole grain” processor.
“Obviously there are some major technical limitations that we wouldn’t have had if we went with a home console, but running the game while streaming 2% milk in real-time is an amazing thing to behold,” said Akihiro Hino, president and CEO of Level-5. “Also, with the Lucky Charms platform, we don’t have to worry about things like ‘gameplay’ and ‘story’, which give gamers the pure Dragon Quest experience; namely paying way too much to stare at cute little slimes for hours on end.”
Lucky Charms was first created in 1962 and has been a hit with consumers ever since. It has gone on to achieve a commanding market lead, outselling the nearest competitor, Nintendo DS, 50 to 1.
