Sony To Pursue New Market With Playstation 3
In a recent interview with EGM, Sony Computer Entertainment President Ken Kutaragi stated that the Playstation 3 was expressly designed to pursue a previously unknown demographic: hardcore gamers.
Through market research, Sony has determined that the hardcore gamer demographic consists of about 10 million males aged 12-25 who prefer 40-hour RPG’s and military shooters.
“Nintendo’s insistence on pursuing so-called casual gamers is sure to spell disaster for this industry. I mean, after you sell Nintendogs to 6 billion people, what’s left? We can sell sequel after sequel of SOCOM and Final Fantasy and hardcore gamers will buy them all,” said Kutaragi.
Sony’s plan comes at great relief to investors skittish about the Playstation 3’s launch. After so thoroughly dominating the videogame market for a decade, analysts mused that the next-gen system would be a complete and utter failure and would cripple Sony.
“It’s good to see at least one company looking to open the industry up to new markets,” said Dan Hsu, editor-in-chief of EGM. “There is a huge demographic of guys who would eat up a God of War sequel. Game makers need to understand that there is a market beyond all those Animal Crossing clones.”
Despite the announcement, critics remain unabated in proclaiming the faults of the Playstation 3. One particular rumor that Sony has been unable to squelch is that the Playstation 3 has a mode in which it will murder sickly orphans. Kutaragi stressed in the interview that this rumor is simply not true.
“Bullsh*t. This rumor was merely a ploy created by Microsoft, who is looking to minimize the PR damage from their Kick-Puppy feature in the Xbox 360.”
