PS3 To Launch 1,000 Consoles In North America
02.21.06 - The Playstation 3, which launches this Spring (or this Fall or this Winter or next year), will storm into North America with 1,000 units, said Ishii Ariyola, vice president of distribution for Sony's North American games division.
Companies always try to guage the market and determine demand for a new product, and Sony believes they have calculated well. "It should be enough to fill the need, no matter when we finally launch" said Ariyola. "We doubt there will be any left on the shelf."
Experts are predicting that the PS3 will completely sell out in under 10 minutes, making it the fastest selling console launch of all time. "That is the kind of publicity that we want," Ariyola deemed.
Despite concerns raised by some analysts about artificially inflating demand, Sony brushes any criticisms aside. "It's not artificial because people actually want it," explained Ariyola. "You can't make them want it, they have to want to
want it. Which is what we want."
