Microsoft To Release Portable XBox
01.09.06 - Microsoft has announced plans to release a portable XBox, tentatively titled "The Lap Box," during a meeting with investors on Thursday as part of an initiative to gain ground on industry leader Sony.
Preliminary information released by Microsoft reveals that the portable system will feature 512 MB of RAM, 80 GB of storage space, and the ability to play videos and music as well as display pictures. It will come standard with a 17 inch backlit screen, four speakers, a headphone jack, a rechargable battery, and a clamshell body.
"This system will blow the competition out of the water," claimed John Rungbottom, Assistant Director of Research & Development at Microsoft's Video Games and Aeronautics Division. "It will do everything a PSP can do, but a million times better. And it should fit in most backpacks."
"We're also planning a tablet peripheral so it can do things the DS can do, but better, obviously," Rungbottom added. The tablet will be designed to connect with The Lap Box via a USB port and allow gamers the same "touch-screen" abilities seen on the Nintendo DS portable video game system.
